In many parts of Africa, Asia, Central & South America, you can contract {malaria} if bitten by an infected mosquito. Consult your doctor regarding malaria tablets at least 1mth before leaving (note: there are strains of malaria in some countries which are particularly resistant to some types of malaria tablets).
If you're visiting a country with resistant strains, you may be prescribed Mefloquine. Take tablets 1 week before, during & 4 weeks after your visit. Avoid mosquito bites by keeping arms & legs covered at sunset, & sleep in screened accommodation, or use mosquito nets. Use insect repellents & sprays. Side effects of malaria tablets are rare, but may include: {nausea}, skin reaction, tummy upset.

Your medication may not give absolute protection against malaria, some forms of which are particularly virulent. The precautions against mosquito bites are an important part of your protection. If you develop a fever or feel ill while abroad or up to 1mth after returning, it is essential to seek medical attention immediately.

It is interesting to note that 'Indian Tonic Water' was originally formulated during the British Raj, not only to complement the alcoholic spirit gin, but also to provide some limited resistance against {malaria}. The mixer contains quinine, which was the only available anti-malarial drug at the time.
